In a bid to ease traffic congestion, Beijing authorities are suggesting that people share taxi during rush hours. Many are welcoming the move to reduce traffic jams, but some are finding it impractical.

It's not easy to get a taxi during rush hours in Beijing. While the authorities are suggesting people share taxis with other passengers, many are finding this is easier said than done.

Sharing a taxi, each passenger only has to pay 60 percent of the total fare. But many ... Read more »

The drive to improve taxi service outside Manhattan's central business district and for disabled New Yorkers has run into the ditch - as once-promising plans have been weakened or scuttled by the powerful yellow cab lobby.

It's time to call the tow truck and get them rolling again.

It was, to his credit, Mayor Bloomberg who forced the issue on both fronts. First, he launched an international competition to name a single design for the official yellow Taxi of Tomorrow. T... Read more »

After a long struggle against the racy ads on the roof of their taxis, Muslim cabbies in New York have won the right to veto the content of the ads on their cars. "We are Muslims, and we do not like the ads!” cabby Mohamed Tahir, 66, told The New York Post.

"If I had another ad, I’d change it right away!," said Tahir, whose taxi is topped with an ad for a strip club.

"It bothers many of us."

Tahir was jubilant that New York's Taxi & Limousine Commission agr... Read more »

MOSCOW -- Despondent middle-aged men blowing whistles made for an unusual scene in downtown Moscow on August 9 as hundreds of taxi drivers gathered to protest a new law they say could destroy their livelihood.

The law, which comes into effect on September 1, requires all taxicabs to be licensed, painted a single color, and be equipped with a taximeter, an orange light on the roof, and special lights on the sides.

The authorities call the la... Read more »

Taxi fares in San Francisco are going up.

The board of the Municipal Transportation Agency approved a meter increase on Tuesday as well as a plan that will put 85 more taxis on city streets in about three months.

The fare hike comes on top of another meter increase the board approved in May.

Both will take effect in 30 days. The cost of an average 3-mile taxi trip will then be about $13, up from $11.

An average trip from downtown to San Francis... Read more »

This yellow-streaked city is no stranger to bitterly fought wars within its taxi industry, a saga that at times can resemble a daytime soap opera. Call it “As the Taxi Turns.”

Imagine this not-unfamiliar scenario: a beleaguered taxi commissioner (and former city councilman) wants more regulation of the hordes of unlicensed, uninspected gypsy cabs that cruise the streets of the outer boroughs. He sets out to convince leaders of the taxi industry th... Read more »

Metered taxis are on Panama’s horizon, but the horizon is a long way off.

Recent trial runs were successful, says the Transit Authority (ATTT) but they won’t be introduced until the planned construction of roads, flyovers, underpasses and the metro subway is completed, and the best projections for that are sometime late in 2014.

ATTT Director Jorge Ricardo Fábrega said that putting meters in cabs now would not be fair to drivers or passengers but transport officials are confident meters ... Read more »
